Maureen's Rant
It's all about community. And, volunteers drive the quality of our community. Choosing where to dedicate your volunteer time can be an important and life changing decision - not to be made on a whim.
Guidelines I use for my volunteer committments are:
1. The cause must be something I am truly passionate about.
2. I must be able to see the impact that organization has on people's lives.
3. It must fit my lifestyle and schedule.
I want to share a couple of volunteer opportunities that make a very deep impact on the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
Be sure to continue reading NEW Face of COPS
and Suzette
for Dogs below.
NEW Face of COPS
Over the last couple of years I have been educated to the inner challenges of my neighborhood by Ofc. Andy Morquecho, my Neighborhood Police Officer (NPO) who still lives in the inner city neighborhood where he grew up.
Listening to Ofc. Morquecho share his sincere passion for making a real difference in our community, I knew I wanted to know more about how criminal elements infected a neighborhood and what must be done on a daily basis to run the criminals out or to jail.
All police work is critical to our city and has to work in tandem. The officers have a laser focus on specific offenses as they work in different departments during their careers.
The NPO's job is uinique because that officer works with all these different focuses at the same time identifying and addressing them on a daily basis.
The NPO knows the street traffic, street people, suspicious homes and businesses - and he knows his Citizens on Patrol (COP) members who are the sponges of information and human sensors that provide the basis for making arrests and getting search warrants.
Learning from Officer Morquecho how COP input assists him in making a huge impact on reducing and preventing crime on his diverse NPO beat (which happens to include my neighborhood) had an impact on me. This led to me volunteering my time to get trained and become active in my area COP group.
Of all the volunteer opportunities I have had over the years, the COP organization is by far the most personally rewarding. Thanks to Officer Morquecho for introducing me to all the benefits of the COP program - education, fellowship, common denominator interest and a very strong working relationship with our city's police department. And, thanks to COP members and Coordinators, like Gerald Huck, who have been volunteers for many years for sharing their knowledge with me.
I am truly impressed with the caliber of citizens who participate in Fort Worth's COP organization and the dedication they have to making our city better for all of us. You can learn more about the COP program and get information on COP and advanced free training at the Fort Worth Police Department website
or by visiting the Westside NPD9 COP website at www.fortworthwestcops.com.
Suzette for Dogs
Another aspect of volunteering is to begin your own movement. I think about my friend Suzette Watkins who owns Riverside Kennel
at the intersection of Lancaster and Riverside Dr. She has truly educated me as well as city elected officials and concerned citizens about the deplorable conditions imposed on many of our city's dogs by owners who are cruel and totally irresponsible.
People and sometimes local politicians stay too busy to realize what is happening day to day outside of the isolated "bubble" they work and live in.
Suzette is relentless in her efforts to make a positive impact on her passion - a legal and enforceable solution to animal cruelty in Fort Worth. Suzette has mobilized citizens with this concern and I commend her.
Suzette has photo documentation to support her efforts. A gallery of these photos will soon to be displayed here at Our Fort Worth. To help or get more information, call Suzette at 817.698.WOOF or send her an email.
Feel free to email
me or call 817.731.0343 with your comments. Thanks for listening!
Regards,
Maureen Sullivan
